Defence and government marine manufacturer, AI Blueprint
A commercial shipbuilder with more than 70 years of precision vessel construction for government and defence clients. ISO9001 certified, small highly skilled workforce.
The problem
Eight operational systems mostly in isolation. Proposals and technical manuals assembled by hand from templates. Job costing based on estimates because no system captured how labour and materials really moved. The Australian Government's Essential Eight cybersecurity framework, increasingly a threshold for defence tender eligibility, had never been formally assessed.
What we built
Factory walk-throughs from design through build and handover. Five stakeholder interviews. Process mapping across tender preparation, contract creation, operator manual production, parts ordering, payroll and client invoicing. A formal Essential Eight baseline assessment across all eight controls. Six prioritised opportunities sequenced across a three-phase Crawl-Walk-Run roadmap over 24 months, with a 90-day action plan and defined success measures.
The outcome
A 24-month roadmap the business could actually execute without disrupting active delivery. A clear uplift path on Essential Eight to meet defence tender thresholds. A governance framework covering AI policy, role evolution and change management. Seventy years of craft excellence finally had a roadmap for the systems to support it.
